Conquering Design Fear: Embracing quirky interior design choices, even when you are scared

Ok, scared might be a bit of a strong word (or feeling) to describe how you may feel when contemplating whether or not you should express your unique personality in your home.

What are the most common reasons interior design enthusiast home owners, like you, holding themselves back?

So far, I have met these type of clients:

  1. They are afraid what other people will think about their unusual, quirky interior design choices.

  2. They aren't sure how to do bold design without it being potentially ridiculous or too much.

  3. They actually love a simple, clutter-free, stylish, minimalist home, despite their love for some quirkiness. (I identify with this group.... by the way 😉)

  4. They listen to the neighbours / MIL's / the builder / real estate agents who keep telling them about how a potential buyer would hate a unique home design - even though they aren't planning to sell any time soon.

  5. They just don't know how to do it the right way. (Fair enough!)

Can you relate to any of these? Or, do you fall in another category, not listed here? I'd love to hear!

3 ways to "safely" introduce your quirky interior design choices in your home

Whatever your design style might be otherwise, these tips will wrok for you. Yes, even if you prefer a minimalist, sophisticated home. (Bold is NOT the opposite of sophistication!)

1. Go bold in the smallest room(s)

This is the easiest! My go to choice of rooms are often guest toilets / downstairs cloak rooms. Why? Two reasons. They are often the smallest, so you don't feel that you go overboard with the quirky design choices. The other reason is as they are an absolute fabulous conversation starters with your guests! 🤣

I mean... if that counts.

But really, instead of being afraid of who might think you are a total nutter becasue of your quirky design, it will be a fun topic to discuss. Believe me! Even the judgiest MIL will love a bit of fun in small amounts in the smallest room of the house.

2. Go bold in a room where you spend the less time

This is the next level confidence as this room might be your spare room, where people will actually spend more time when they come over. Regardless, this is your home, and if you want to express your unique personality without letting it ovepower the aesthetic of your home, a spare room is a great space to do it.

If I was a guest, I'd appreciate the fun and the thought that goes into it - intead of the often bland and unimaginative spare room feeling that a lot of guest room have.

3. Go bold in your main living space - but keep everything else to the absolute minimum

Now this is the top level confidence. Your quirky interior design style WILL be in your face - so to speak, but you let it steel the show and you keep ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING simple and minimalist.

The bottom line

The best way to add quirkyness without adding clutter or just overall too much stuff is to make your walls unique - like in the examples on the images.

They are also the easies to change if you made a mistake or just got bored of it.

I feel that adding quirky objects or furniture pieces will get lost if they are one off pieces (aka what's the point) or if there is more of them they can easily become clutter.

But, you can experiment with:

quirky wall art

unique pieces of one off furniture

bold fabric choice for your armchair or even your sofa

Go for it!
