What is interior space planning and why it should be the first step of any interior design project

Space planning is fundamental in any interior design project and essentially involves organising and arranging the physical space within the footprint of your home, to optimize its functionality and aesthetics. It is driven by the lifestyle of the home owners and the process of determining how a space will be used and how different elements, such as furniture, fixtures, and architectural features, will be arranged to achieve a functional, comfortable and beautiful home.

The importance of space planning lies in its ability to create a well-balanced and efficient layout that meets the needs and preferences of the occupants while considering the architectural constraints of the space.

The reasons why space planning is considered the first and crucial step in any interior design project:

Functionality

The arrangement of furniture and other elements (final decoration should also be considered at this stage, especially if there are artworks or collections to display) should support the activities that will take place within it.

This is where your lifestyle comes into play, as a family uses their home in a different way than a couple or a single professional would.

Efficiency

Proper space planning helps maximise the use of available space, preventing overcrowding or underutilization of areas. It aims to achieve an optimal balance between open and enclosed spaces, allowing for smooth circulation and efficient use of square footage.

There minimum and ideal distances and space requirements for certain activities in a home and only when these are considered carefully will you be able to have a home where everything have its space and there is no space left unused.

This is where storage plays a big part in creating a comfortable home. Do you want lots of wardrobes in your bedroom? Or would you prefer some sleek, hidden options instead - this is the stage when you can decide!

Traffic Flow

Consideration of how people will move through a space is essential. Well-designed space planning takes into account traffic flow, ensuring that pathways are clear and logical, and that there is a natural and convenient movement through different areas.

Have you been in a home where you feel you go around circles all the time? Or, in fact, you can only go in and out? OR, you have to go through 3 or even 4 doors to get to a room?

Aesthetics

What does it have to do with space planning?

While functionality is paramount, space planning also plays a crucial role in creating visually pleasing and harmonious environments. The arrangement of furniture and elements should contribute to a cohesive and aesthetically pleasing design.

While thinking about furniture layout, think about what you see. What you look at sitting on the sofa? What do you see when entering a room?

This all needs to be considered at this stage, so you don't find yourself wondering how to finish the look and style your space once everything is done and dusted.

If you have valuable artwork to display that should be considered as centre of attention at this stage.

Flexibility

Effective space planning allows for adaptability and flexibility in how a space is used over time. It considers potential changes in needs or activities and ensures that the design can accommodate modifications without major disruptions.

If you need a baby nursery now, you will soon need a kid's room and potentially a separate play room would be handy too. But at the moment you prefer a snug for movie night and a little home office?

Get what I mean? Think about the function of all your rooms during the time you are planning to spend in your home. Often, this consideration now will eliminate the need to move houses or a major remodel.

In summary,

space planning is foundational to the success of an interior design project. It goes way beyond the position of the walls and doors!

It sets the framework for all subsequent design decisions and contributes to creating spaces that are both functional and aesthetically pleasing, meeting the needs of the occupants while considering practical and logistical considerations.

Space planning is can be done for a single room, multiple rooms or an entire home.

I recommend getting an interior designer involved to review the architects' proposed floor plan before renovation works begin, as an interior design will have a very different angle to look at your home, just like as discussed in this blog post.

If you didn't spend a good 2 hours talking to your architect about your lifestyle and family, the chances are, your space isn't personalised to your needs.
